Homecoming Dress Tips

Homecoming is a time to celebrate shared experiences, when alumni from high schools and colleges return to their past schools to reconnect with people, places and traditions.

Homecoming Circa: 1910

Homecoming dates back as far as 1918 with an event that drew over 10,000 alumni and fans for a weekend of speeches, rallies, dances and a parade, with the big game as the weekend’s center point. More than just a football game, the modern homecoming has evolved into a week of celebrations ranging from tailgate parties and bonfires to formal dances and the coronation of a homecoming court. Newer traditions include spirit week, parades and float competitions.

Homecoming court: Circa 1930

Homecoming court dates back to 1930 when the queens were chosen based both on the float they were riding on and the individual person. Now, the students will nominate and elect a homecoming court to represent the school. The king and queen are revealed the night of the homecoming game at half time. The homecoming dance usually takes place the night after the game.

The dance is typically a semi-formal event that allows for some flexibility in what to wear. For the guys they can wear nice jeans or khaki’s with a button up shirt and tie or a nice polo. For girls, semi-formal refers to shorter dresses. The dress may be strapless, sleeves or sleeveless, open backed or closed, halter style or sweetheart neckline, sparkled with jewels or without. For those in the colder weather climates, the dress can be worn with a fun wrap or bolero jacket. And we can’t forget the shoes! For shoes, you can wear a fun pair of sparking heels or flats with straps, open toed or closed. Depending on the dress you can even wear a cute pair of fun boots!
